Memorial stone at former mass grave at „Skradnji Brig“ in Siegendorf

In a small wooded area, approximately 100 meters south of the village cemetery in Siegendorf, there is a concrete enclosure with a memorial stone, which was likely erected by the Soviet administration after the liberation in 1945. It testifies that there was a mass grave for deceased Hungarian-Jewish forced laborers in this area. The victims were employed from November 1944 to March 1945 for construction work on the Southeast Wall and partly also at the Siegendorf sugar factory. They died as a result of the consequences of catastrophic living and working conditions as well as a outbreak of typhus epidemic. An exhumation of the buried took place in 1985. During this process, the remains of 67 corpses were recovered and reburied on the new Jewish cemetery in Eisenstadt.
