Memorial Plaque for Former Synagogue in Güssing

Since 1997, a memorial plaque at the town hall of Güssing has reminded visitors of the former synagogue in Güssing. This was vandalized during the so-called Reichskristallnacht in 1938, when furniture, ledgers, Torah scrolls, and other items were burned on the square in front of the synagogue. As a result, the building was converted by the National Socialists into a sports and event hall. The Jewish population of Güssing, approximately 70 people, was almost entirely expelled from Güssing by the summer of 1938. The synagogue was demolished in 1953, and the present town hall was built at its location.
