Memorial plaque for Karl Halaunbrenner in Großpetersdorf

Since 2009, a memorial plaque for the former post commander Karl Halaunbrenner has been located in the entrance area of the police station in Großpetersdorf. Karl Halaunbrenner was born in 1881 as the son of Jewish parents in the part of Bukowina that is now in Romania, and he began his service as a gendarme in Burgenland in 1922. As post commander of Großpetersdorf, he vigorously opposed followers of this party during the NSDAP ban, despite intimidation attempts. In 1938, Karl Halaunbrenner was arrested due to his Jewish heritage and deported to the Dachau concentration camp. From there, he was transferred to the Buchenwald concentration camp, where he died shortly afterwards as a result of mistreatment.
