Memorial plaque at church wall of St. Martin's Church in Deutsch Schützen

In September 1995, a commemorative plaque was unveiled at the outer wall of Martinskirche near Deutsch Schützen to remember the Jewish victims who were shot in the Urbarialwald in March 1945.

In the community of Deutsch Schützen, about 500 Hungarian-Jewish forced laborers were held for the construction of the Southeast Wall from December 1944. Just before the arrival of the Red Army, on March 29, 1945, members of the local Hitler Youth received orders from the head of the construction section to lead the forced laborers in small groups towards the vicinity of Martinskirche, east of Deutsch Schützen. There, SS men took over the captives and led them into the adjacent forest, where executions began. After shooting around 60 men, the killing was halted. The bodies of the victims were buried in the woods and were only rediscovered in August 1995 based on the statements of the survivor Moshe Zairi.
