Memorial Plaque for Dr. Richard Berczeller in Mattersburg

In commemoration of the 85th birthday of Dr. Richard Berczeller, the town of Mattersburg placed a commemorative plaque at his former residence in 1987. Dr. Berczeller worked as a doctor in Mattersburg from 1929. He was actively involved in the Social Democratic Workers' Party and became a member of the illegal Revolutionary Socialists in 1934. In the following years of Austrofascism, he was interned several times and had his medical contract revoked. In 1938, he was arrested by the Gestapo in Mattersburg and shortly afterwards expelled. In 1938, he and his family managed to flee via France to the USA, where he arrived in 1941.
