Memorial Plaque for Forced Laborers of Hungarian-Jewish Origin in Donnerskirchen

In the area of Donnerskirchen/Purbach, about 750 Hungarian Jews were employed as fortification workers for the Southeast Wall from December 1944. The forced laborers were accommodated in the basement of what is known as Martinsschlössl in Donnerskirchen. From early January to mid-February 1945, more than 320 men died due to unsanitary conditions, inadequate nutrition, and murder. In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Hungarian forced laborers, a memorial plaque was installed in the basement level of the Genussakademie Burgenland at Martinsschlössl in Donnerskirchen on initiative of the Verein Genuss Burgenland, in cooperation with the Hungarian NS Victim Association and the Culture Department of Burgenland, and unveiled on September 10, 2015.
