Anton-Tuder-Straße, Villach/Beljak

Anton Tuder was born on January 16, 1888, in St. Lamprecht bei Rosegg. The trained carpenter voluntarily served in the k. u. k. military service before becoming a station master with the Imperial-Royal Railways. In addition, he engaged in the Social Democrats as a town councilor and was mayor of the community Maria Gail from 1931 until February 1934. The dissolution of the Social Democratic Party in February 1934 resulted in Anton Tuder being relieved of his mayoral duties. Due to his political engagement, he was several times imprisoned during the Austrofascist Dollfuß regime in 1936 and after the “Anschluss” in 1938. In early 1942, he was acquitted by the Vienna People's Court, yet he was transported to the concentration camp Mauthausen Gusen. Shortly afterwards, the family received the news that Anton Tuder had died in the camp on August 27, 1942.
The street where Anton Tuder once lived was renamed in his honor on the initiative of the SPÖ town councilor Franz Prettner in 1978.
