Memorial Site Lagerstraße Stalag XVIII A Wolfsberg

The German Wehrmacht referred to large prisoner-of-war camps established on German soil for the internment of soldiers from enemy countries as "Stammlager," abbreviated as "Stalag." In Wolfsberg, one of the Stammlager of Wehrkreis XVIII (Salzburg) was "Stalag XVIII A." From March 1941, prisoners-of-war from various nations were housed here. After World War II, the British occupying authorities used the camp to intern German war criminals and functionaries of the Nazi regime from Styria and Carinthia. In 2013, an information panel was erected on the site, featuring historical photos, a plan of the former camp, and an introductory text in German, French, English, and Russian providing context about its historical setting. In 2022, the area was completely transformed into a larger and more prominent memorial site with seating facilities. The 2013 information panel was integrated into the memorial ensemble.
