Memorial for Jožef Kanzian in Hintergupf/Zavrh

Jožef Kanzian was born on September 2, 1927, in a Carinthian Slovene farmer's family near Abtei/Apače. In late summer 1944, he joined the Partisan* movement with his already sought-after father. By the end of December of that year, the 17-year-old was killed during an altercation with NS soldiers near St. Margarethen im Rosental/Šmarjeta v Rožu. Initially buried there, in October 1945, his body was brought back to Abtei/Apače, where a monument also stands today. A monument commemorating Jožef Kanzian's death at the same location where he died on December 30, 1944, during the Partisan* battles, can be found on a meadow next to House Hintergupf Number 9. The now barely readable Slovene inscription describes his death by bullet. His image is also almost completely faded.
