Memorial plaque for Franc Pasterk Lenart at the cemetery Bad Eisenkappel/Železna Kapla

At the base of the memorial for the NS victims of the community of Bad Eisenkappel in the lower part of the cemetery near the entrance on the right side stands a relief with the face of Franc Pasterk-Lenart. Born in 1912, Franc Pasterk-Lenart grew up at the Tavčmanhof in Lobnig near Eisenkappel. With his brother Jurij Pasterk, he was one of the first in Eisenkappel to join the Liberation Front (OF). After his desertion from the Wehrmacht, he joined the PartisanInnen in October 1942. In the spring of 1943, Lenart became commander of the first Carinthian Partisan Battalion. During a successful attack on April 3, 1943, on the village of Mieß (Mežica, in present-day Slovenia), an unknown armed person seriously wounded Pasterk, causing him to die shortly afterwards. In Eisenkappel, he – like Matija Verdnik-Tomaž in Suetschach – is venerated as a People's Hero. Every year on the Sunday after Easter Sunday, in accordance with his death date, the Partisan Association holds a commemorative ceremony at the cemetery in Eisenkappel.
