Memorial Plaque for Angela Piskernik in Klagenfurt/Celovec

Angela Piskernik was born on 27 August 1886 in Bad Eisenkappel/Železna Kapla. The Carinthian Slovene woman earned her doctorate at the University of Vienna and made a career as a botanist. Due to her engagement for the Slovene minority in Carinthia, she was arrested by the National Socialists in 1943 and deported to the Ravensbrück concentration camp. After her return in 1945, she became director of the Natural History Museum in Ljubljana and continued to engage in nature conservation and transboundary national parks until her death in 1967. A request from the city of Klagenfurt in 2015 to name a street after Angela Piskernik was rejected. To still mark a sign of remembrance for her in Klagenfurt, the Catholic Action Carinthia initiated in 2021 the installation of a commemorative plaque to the left of the entrance gate of the Ursuline School, where Angela Piskernik worked as a student and teacher. In her hometown Bad Eisenkappel/Železna Kapla, a commemorative plaque in her memory was installed at the church square in 2015.
