Memorial Plaque for Maria Stromberger

Maria Stromberger was born on March 16, 1898, in Metnitz and later lived in Vorarlberg. The nurse volunteered for service at the extermination camp Auschwitz in 1942. As head nurse in the infirmary, she supported prisoners in various ways and engaged in resistance. After the liberation from Nazism, she lived until her death in 1957 in Bregenz. On May 18, 2016, a commemorative plaque was unveiled in the courtyard of the Wernberg Abbey for Maria Stromberger, who was remembered as "Angel of Auschwitz" due to her humanitarian actions. This plaque, designed by artist Nežika Novak, includes a portrait of Maria Stromberger along with scenes from the extermination camp Auschwitz.
