Memorial Plaque for Fallen US Soldiers at Franziskanerplatz Innsbruck

Veterans of the US "Cactus Division" prompted the erection of a memorial during a visit to Innsbruck. In 1995, Landeshauptmann Wendelin Weingartner (ÖVP) and Bürgermeister Herwig van Staa (For Innsbruck) unveiled a commemorative plaque in German and English together with a US veteran at the courtyard of the Innsbrucker Zeughaus. In 1997, it was transferred to the Franziskanerplatz. On April 11, 1997, Landesrat Fritz Astl and Vizebürgermeister Eugen Sprenger (both ÖVP) unveiled the plaque with the insignia of the 103rd Infantry Division (Cactus Division), the 36th Infantry Division (Texas Division), and the 44th Infantry Division, which liberated Tyrol, as well as the 42nd Infantry Division (Rainbow Division), which was stationed in the region from mid-May 1945.
