Memorial Plaque for the Villa Gänsbacherstraße 4 and the Jewish Couple Alice and Karl Bauer at the StudentInnen-Wohnheim Saggen Innsbruck

As a Jew, Alice Klein, married to Karl Bauer, had to sell her villa along with the garden at Gänsbacherstraße 4 to the Innsbruck Savings Bank at a mock price in the spring of 1939 in order to flee to the USA. The bank passed the property on to the NSDAP. After the war, the assets of the NSDAP fell to the Republic of Austria. In April 1948, Alice Bauer received her villa back with financial losses, but she had to continue legal proceedings with the Republic and the Savings Bank until 1950. In August 1957, the World Council of Churches, represented by the Evangelical Church Council A.B. in Vienna, acquired the villa. In 1980, the Church Council donated the property to the Diakonisches Verein Tirol, which today operates the Student Housing Saggen. The Evangelical Superintendent Olivier Dantine of the Diocese of Salzburg/Tirol initiated the installation of the memorial plaque at the entrance area of the Student Housing Saggen. It was inaugurated on January 17, 2016.
