Memorial Plaque for Ilse Brüll at the Entrance of Ilse-Brüll-Gasse Middle School Innsbruck

Ilse Brüll fled with her cousin Inge in April 1939 on a children's transport to Holland, but the SS arrested Ilse at the Kloster Eersel and murdered her on 3.9.1942 in the Auschwitz concentration camp. The educational scientist Peter Stöger initiated a memorial plaque for Ilse Brüll, formerly a student at the Hauptschule in Michael-Gaismair-Straße. On 28.4.2004, Inge Brüll and city councilwoman Christine Oppitz-Plörer (For Innsbruck) unveiled a bronze memorial plaque. Esther Fritsch, President of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde for Tirol and Vorarlberg, criticized the plaque text developed by the city education office separately from the official ceremony. The formulation "representing all those children of Innsbruck who became victims of this time" was rejected by Fritsch, because the murder of Jewish children in the concentration camps was incomparable and the mention of National Socialism was avoided.
