Brauhofsaal

After the "Anschluss" in 1938, Krems became the new "Gauhauptstadt" of Niederdonau. However, the administration was never fully moved from Vienna to Krems, as the corresponding premises were lacking. The only civilian new building from the time of the NS regime was the Brauhofsaal.

That it could be built at this location was also due to the ruthless expulsion policy of the National Socialists. In the houses immediately next to the Steinertor, outside the city walls, some Jewish families lived, who had to leave the city by September 1938. Now, nothing stood in the way of their rapid demolition. In November 1940, the Brauhofsaal was ceremoniously opened.

Now the NSDAP could gather the citizens of the city for large demonstrations. In addition to party events, concerts, lectures, and theater performances took place here. Later, the Winterhilfswerk collected wool gloves, underwear, or skis for the soldiers on the Eastern Front. As the last effort of the national socialist war, the Volkssturm was sworn in here in 1945.

After the end of the war, cultural life began with concerts by the Soviet military, with opera performances and boxing events. Graduates celebrated here just as did the Union of Stalingrad Fighters. The Brauhofsaal remained the only large hall in the city. It was used intensively until the 1990s and is associated with positive memories for generations of Kremser:innen.

In 1993, the Brauhofsaal was demolished. It had to make way for a large shopping center. What remains is a door threshold at a side entrance of the Brauhof.
