Memorial for 63 nameless Jewish concentration camp prisoners in Seefeld Forest Cemetery

On April 28, 1945, a train transport with 1,700 Jewish prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp arrived in Seefeld, where their death march began. The Black Cross, the Tyrolean State Government, and the town of Seefeld erected a memorial stone in 1948 for the Jewish victims at the newly built forest cemetery. On initiative of the Jewish Community, under the presidency of Esther Fritsch, a new memorial was finally created, which the Chief Rabbi Paul Chaim Eisenberg consecrated on October 31, 2016. Six diagonally cut tree stumps remind of the inviolability of Jewish graves, while 63 anthracite-colored concrete cubes with engraved David stars commemorate each individual Jewish victim. The cubes also symbolize millions of victims of both world wars. The architect Michael Prachensky sees his memorial as an utopian Gesamtkunstwerk, which "consciously unites the Jewish victims, the soldiers, and the citizens who died here in Seefeld in peace."
