On August 3, 1944, German fighter planes shot down an American bomber on the north side of the Hohen Munde. The pilot and the gunner lost their lives. In the summer of 2000, Keith M. Bullock and Gerd Leitner placed a memorial plaque below the Hohen Munde at the crossroads over the Leutascher Schlucht along the path through the Gaistal. The crash site is located on the opposite rock face.
