After bombardment by German fighter aircraft, a US-American airplane crashed on August 3, 1944, in the Brendlkar in the Gaistal valley. Two crew members died. In summer 2000, Keith M. Bullock and Gerd Leitner directly at the crash site placed a commemorative plaque on the small iron cross about 400 meters east of the Brendlsee, on the little-used trail to the Scharte between the Igelsköpfe.
