Memorial for U.S. American and German Air Force personnel at the War Memorial Ehrwald

On August 3, 1944, there were intense air battles that extended from Vils through the surrounding areas to the Inn Valley. German fighters shot down eight U.S. aircraft with 79 crew members. 30 men lost their lives. The Ehrwald Museum Association erected a memorial in memory of these events, designed by Gerd Leitner. The stone of the memorial comes from the quarry in Mauthausen, the turbocharger of a U.S. aircraft was recovered by Keith M. Bullock from the Leutascher Gorge. For all costs, U.S. veterans and their descendants, locals, and companies from the communities of Leutasch and Ehrwald contributed. Pastor Michael Lerchenmüller from Holzhausen consecrated the memorial on August 3, 2001. Deborah Benson, the granddaughter of one of the bomber gunners, unveiled it.
