A commemorative plaque affixed by UNESCO in 2009 at the old border fence on the "Rohr" in Lustenau reminds us of the fate of those who attempted to flee into Switzerland over the Old Rhine and the "Rohr". For the Wehrmachts deserter Josef Hagen from Lustenau, his escape through the "Rohr" ended fatally in 1944. He was shot by a Lustenauer "Hilfszöllner" and died in the hospital in Altstätten (Switzerland) from his injuries. The memorial site "Am Rohr" is part of the historical circular route of the municipality of Lustenau.
