Memorial Plaque at the Jewish Cemetery Hohenems

The Jewish cemetery in Hohenems was built in 1617 on the southern edge of the town, when the first Jewish women and men had settled there. In total, more than 500 graves are located on the site. 370 tombstones have remained preserved to this day. In 1938, the cemetery was seized by the National Socialist municipal administration, and in the autumn of 1938, cemetery desecrations took place. After the end of the war, the cemetery was transferred back to the religious community in Innsbruck, and it is now in the possession of a Swiss association, founded by descendants of Jewish families from Hohenems for the preservation of this site, and it still serves as a burial ground. In 1992, a memorial plaque was installed at the entrance of the cemetery for the Jewish victims of National Socialism in Vorarlberg.
