Hugo Lunardon (1893-1940) was appointed gendarme in Hohenems after his return from Russian prisoner of war captivity, 1933 post commander in Dornbirn. He arrested illegal SS members and uncovered bomb attacks, for which he was awarded by President Miklas. Lunardon was arrested by the National Socialists on 12 March 1938, and was transported via Innsbruck to the concentration camps Dachau and Mauthausen, where he died in 1940 after being tortured by an SS-Hauptscharführer. The State Gendarmerie Command has commemorated him since 1999 with a memorial stone on the grounds of the State Police Academy in Feldkirch.
