Memorial Stone for Carl Lampert at the Cemetery Dornbirn

Carl Lampert (1894–1944) was a parish priest in the parish of St. Martin in Dornbirn from 1918 to 1930. Lampert was the highest-ranking representative of the Catholic Church who was imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately executed by the National Socialists. Shortly after the "Anschluss" of Austria in March 1938, Carl Lampert came into ever stronger conflict with the ruling regime due to his statements. After being imprisoned in the concentration camps Dachau and Sachsenhausen-Oranienburg, Lampert was "gauverwiesen" in 1941 and banished to Stettin. On November 13, 1944, in Halle an der Saale, he was beheaded on charges of espionage. The inscription on the priest's grave was supplemented in 2006 with "as a witness of faith, executed."
