Ernst Volkmann (1902-1941) settled in Bregenz in 1927 as a guitar maker and bellman. He repeatedly did not comply with the call-up for military service, finally being conscripted in 1941, but he refused the Führereid, as his religious beliefs were not compatible with National Socialism. He was sentenced to death by the Reich War Court in Berlin and was executed in Brandenburg-Görden on 9.8.1941. Ernst Volkmann is incorrectly listed as having fallen in Berlin in 1941 on the Landeskriegerdenkmal.
