Ernst Volkmann Memorial Plaque

Ernst Volkmann (1902-1941) settled in Bregenz as a guitar maker and Mesner in 1924. He repeatedly failed to comply with the call-up for military service, but was finally conscripted in 1941. Despite his religious convictions, he refused to take the Führer's oath. Volkmann was sentenced to death by the Reichskriegsgericht in Berlin and executed on August 9, 1941, in Brandenburg-Görden. Volkmann is falsely listed as a fallen soldier of 1941 on the war memorial. To draw attention to the true circumstances of his death, a commemorative plaque designed by the artist Georg Vith was erected in 2010, which in its design resembles a bus stop and traces Volkmann's life path. The commemorative plaque that was attached to the church wall in 2007 was removed as part of the installation of the commemorative plaque in 2010.
