Memorial Route Station: Anton Renz Weg Bregenz

Anton Renz (1924-1945) deserted the Wehrmacht towards the end of the war and hid in the cellar of his parents' house in Bregenz. On May 1, 1945, advancing German troops attempted to prevent the advance of French soldiers by detonating the Achbrücke bridge between Bregenz and Lauterach. After Renz and his friend Helmut Falch had tried to defuse the already placed explosives, they were arrested by the SS and executed after a brief interrogation in Lauterach. On May 8, 1945, they were buried on the cemetery of Bregenz-Vorkloster. The site is part of a memorial trail that has been commemorating resistance and persecution in Bregenz since 2002 with several commemorative plaques.
