Gedenkweg-Station: Gestapo-Hauptquartier Bregenz

In the Römerstraße 7 was the Gestapo main headquarters for Vorarlberg between 1938 and 1945. Since a considerable part of the Vorarlberg Gestapo work concerned border security towards Switzerland, it was officially called "Grenzkommissariat Bregenz". In total, approximately 10,000 people were interrogated by the National Socialists until liberation, of whom about 6,000 were subsequently imprisoned in the Bregenzer Oberstadt prison. The site is part of a memorial trail that has been marked since 2002 with several commemorative plaques remembering resistance and persecution in Bregenz.
