Bahnhof Krems

On April 2, 1945, the train station in Krems was the target of an air attack by the 15th US Fleet, involving 105 aircraft. The objective was to disrupt the supply lines for German troops, which, after the destruction of the transport routes between Munich and Vienna, were entirely routed through Krems. The destruction of the train station area extended to the synagogue at the end of Dinstlstraße, which itself remained largely undamaged.

Approximately a hundred civilians were killed in the bombing attack, mostly buried in a mass grave on the Krems cemetery. In 2022, the city of Krems' Historians' Advisory Board proposed to mark the grave and name the deceased. The architecture of the buildings in the train station area, all of which were constructed after 1945, still reveals the scale of the destruction today.
