Stein der Erinnerung - Zwi Perez Chajes-School and Collection Site

On November 30, 2007, two stones of remembrance were laid in the sidewalk in front of the house at Castellezgasse 35. One remembers a collection camp that was operated by the national socialist regime here from 1941 to 1945. The purpose was the detention of Jewish women and men prior to their deportation to ghettos, concentration and extermination camps. Between 1923 and 1936, this was the location of the Chajes Realgymnasium. After the takeover of power, the National Socialists held elementary and secondary school instruction as well as preparatory courses for forced emigration to Palestine here until 1941. Among the deportees and victims are Heinz Diamant, Chana Dvoskin and Leibusch Garfinkel, who are named specifically. Heinz Diamant was deported from Vienna to Maly Trostinec on October 5, 1942, and murdered there on October 9, 1942. Chana Dvoskin was deported from Vienna to Izbica on April 9, 1942, and murdered in the Holocaust. Leibusch Garfinkel was deported from Vienna to Theresienstadt on August 20, 1942, and murdered there on April 19, 1944. Amalie Flaschner committed suicide.
