Memorials for the Victims of Stein

Directly next to the entrance of the cemetery in Stein is a memorial for the victims of the massacre on April 6, 1945. The exhumation of the murdered began in January 1950 and their burial lasted eleven days, during which the city remained black-flagged. Only for 112 of the 321 corpses could the identity be determined, their names, however, are not mentioned on the memorial.

Ten meters away, a memorial stone, erected by the Polish government in 2015, draws attention to members of a Polish resistance organization. They belonged to a group of more than 40 condemned prisoners from the Vienna Regional Court, who only nine days after the massacre, after a multi-day march, reached the empty prison Stein, where they were shot by members of the Waffen-SS. The non-Polish resistance fighters among these victims are not mentioned on the memorial.
