Giuseppe Burger

At the celebration on the day of liberation in Nabrežina, a renewed commemorative plaque was presented, dedicated to Giuseppe Burger. [..] Giuseppe Burger was born on 28 February 1898 in Nabrežina. He worked in the fields of trade unionism and politics. In the shipyard, where he found employment after the First World War, he was secretary of the metalworkers' union FIOM. Later, he worked for several years as a stonecutter in his home town, where he became a representative of the stonecutters' union. He belonged to the first generation of communists in his home town, since he joined the party immediately after its establishment, and in the early 1930s became the leader of its local organisation. In the middle of 1934, he was arrested as part of an extensive police operation against the illegal party movement, which took place in the Nabrežina-Komenski Kras, Tržič and Lower Friuli. From Nabrežina, a number of tens of anti-fascists were arrested. Eight of them (himself, Srečko Colji, Danilo Pertot, Josip Grudn, Ruggero Peressin, Beniamino Fonzari, Albin Pertot and Ferdo Rukin) were later tried in Rome by a special court. Burger, who at that time was supporting his family of three children, was sentenced to five years in prison. Before the sentence, he was imprisoned in the Roman prison Regina Coeli, and later was sent to serve his sentence in various places, among them Fossano, from where he was released prematurely. Immediately after Italy's surrender, he joined the partisans. As a member of the 1st Kras Battalion, he was wounded in the battles and died on 13 October 1943 in Gorica. [..] On 11 November 1945, his remains, together with the remains of three other fallen fighters, were solemnly buried in the local cemetery. On 1 May 1950, a commemorative plaque was unveiled on the street next to the main square, which was intended, according to the plaque's designers, to be named after him one day (similar to the tree in front of the church named after Alojzije Colji, whose commemorative plaque was also unveiled on the same day). The name Giuseppe Burger appears both on the plaque commemorating the victims of fascism in the local area (unveiled in July 1947) and on the memorial to the fallen for the whole municipality (unveiled in October 1970). In October 2009, the section VZPI Devin-Nabrežina organised a commemorative evening on the 75th anniversary of the arrest of the aforementioned group of anti-fascists. The street where the plaque stands still does not bear his name, but it is indeed true that we have appropriately remembered him.
