Fossoli, Taborišče Fossoli, Italy

Approximately six
kilometers from Carpi, in the area of Fossoli, the camp is still visible, which
was built in 1942 by the royal army for the detention of enemy soldiers (p. 73).

In December 1943
the Italian Social Republic transformed this site into a concentration camp
for Jews. From March 1944, it became a police and transit camp (Polizei und
Durchgangslager), which the SS used as a transit area to the Nazi
concentration camps.

Its use
exceeds the war period, as it was reconfigured for civilian use; with this
function, it remained inhabited until the 1970s, when it became empty and
abandoned.

Only in 1984 did
the municipality of Carpi acquire ownership of the site for free from the
state, with the commitment to become a National Museum of Deportations, based
on its role as a national camp for deportations from Italy during the period
of the Social Republic.

Its long
history brings together a variety of events and memories that represent a
typical cross-section of major historical themes of the 20th century, which
the restored military barracks also reveal in material
traces.

Today, it is a place with
history, meetings, and education.
