Celje, Memorial to War and Peace

Memorial War and Peace is a work by the academic group of Jakob Savinšek.

It consists of an open stone block to which bronze relief figures are attached, narrating tales of war and its horrors, as well as peace, conceived after efforts and sacrifices.

The memorial was unveiled on April 30, 1958.

In the Register of Cultural Heritage, this location is known as Memorial and Tomb of National Heroes with number EŠD 4268.

Apart from the War and Peace memorial, a tomb for national heroes was also revealed in 1958, designed by architect Emil Navinšek. It housed the remains of national heroes:

• Dušan Kraigher-Jug, member of PK KPS for Styria
• Franc Leskošek - Luka
• Ivan Kovačič-Efenka, former commander of 14th Division
• generalmajor Franc Rojšek-Jaka, former commander of 18th Division.
  Also interred were Vera Šlander-Lojzka, secretary of PK SKOJ for Styria, and Mica Šlander-Marinko, a member of CK KPS. Their names are inscribed on the tomb's plaque.

By 2025, the tomb no longer exists; it is only commemorated by an entry in the Register of Cultural Heritage, several old photographs online, and changes in the pressure marks where the tombstone once stood. The tomb was abandoned, and the remains of the deceased were transferred to the tomb of fallen fighters at Golovec cemetery. When and how this happened is unknown to researchers.

There are no dedications or inscriptions on the War and Peace memorial.
