British - Memorial Square of Andrej Kmet

Life of Andrej Kmeta was a life of a revolutionary. Born on 1 December 1907 in a working-class peasant family. He trained as a smith. As he could not find work in his forge, he took employment in Kranj at Inteks as a worker. Already in early youth, more pronouncedly in the mill, he became aware of exploitation and hardship faced by an unscrupulous worker and hence participated in a known textile strike as early as 1936. He was an organizer and workers' trustee. The arrival of occupiers found Andrej prepared; for soon after their call to the Communist Party, he responded and began organizing OF (Partisan Organization) on the territory around Britof.

On 31 July 1941, he was arrested at his home by Gestapo, but managed to break free despite being wounded and fled to partisans on Storžič.

During an attack by Germans on Verbičevo koča near Storžič on 5 August 1941, where he was treating a wound on his right flank, Andrej Kmeta was killed. The Gestapo threw his body into flames. As a brave revolutionary, only ashes remained.

After liberation, his remains were transferred to Predoslje and buried in the common cemetery.

The memorial plaque made by Božo Mostar of Stražišču, measuring 60 cm x 65 cm, was taken by the municipal council of ZB NOV Britof. It was unveiled on 8 August 1954.
