BONINI Memorial to Veronika Bonin

A black granite slab with a frame in the shape of lines from white sandstone with a carved tympanum ending with a petrokrak star is placed on a concrete pedestal. It was placed on 29. 8. 1980 in memory of the partisan teacher Veronika Bonin.

May 1944, the young activist and courier Veronika Bonin from Boninov noticed that the fascists were approaching the house of her uncle Ivan Starca-Kneza in Cereje. She ran from her home to her uncle's house to warn him of the danger and to escape. She fell, shot by a rifle on the path. […]

Bonini: Veronika Bonin from Boninov near Kopru gathered 10 to 12 children. She started teaching in January 1944 and ended her teaching by the end of February 1944, that is already after two months. She was forced to stop teaching, since the Koper fascists started to follow her, since she was also a very active courier. She bought Slovenian books herself in Trieste. The children from Boninov visited school at her home. On 2. May 1944, the fascists killed her near her birth village. They also killed her uncle Ivan Starca-Petelina, the main activist of OF of this area, on the same day.29«
