BELSKO- Graveyard with Memorial

Vas Belsko was an important crossroads of partisan crossings and courier routes towards Podgora and the Hrušice woods. On 3 January 1943, it was first visited by fighters of the Pivška squad with commander Jožet Korenčič-Tarzan accompanied by the local man Karl Lekšan. On 9 May 1943, the fighters of the same squad attacked an Italian soldier in the area of the Belsko mill. Already on 12 May, the fascists began to maltreat the villagers with mass arrests. Eleven people were sent to internment in Italy, of whom three later died of suffering in German camps. The author of the memorial is Marino Kontelj. Source: Memorials in the municipality of Postojna
