On the present Museum Square, the prison has stood since 1822, capable of holding up to a thousand prisoners; it was among the largest in former Austria. During the years of fascist occupation, it was small. Therefore, the former building, located next to the present tobacco warehouse, west of the mechanical workshops of Slavnik in Semedel, was used for prisons and torture chambers. In 1930, they tortured the base camp victims Bidovč, Marušič, Miloš, and Valenčič in it. A memorial plaque with a dedication to all those who suffered in prisons was erected at the primary school Janka Premrla-Vojka on Patricia Lumumbe Street; it was unveiled on the 40th anniversary of KPJ, in December 1959. A memorial with a dedication is also on the remains of the fascist torture chamber in Semedel, 100 m from the intersection of the roads Ljubljana—Piran and Koper—Semedela; it was unveiled in July 1970.
