Ambrus, grave of Rudij Stanič

Rudi Stanič was born on 20th September 1905 in Indianapolis (USA), since his parents were our emigrants in America.

They returned home to Avče in 1907, when Rudi was two years old. With hard-earned money, his parents built a new house in Avče on the Primorska. His father was a hotelkeeper, known as a honest worker and a conscious Slovene.

Rudi attended primary school in Avče, two classes of real school in Idrija and one year of commercial school in Gorica.

As a student, he was an active member of Slovene progressive societies in Gorica, in which his national awareness and broader insight into the problems of contemporary life were formed. He shared the fate with all progressive-oriented Slovenes—persecuted. Due to his progressive political involvement, he could not continue his studies, nor did he get a job. Therefore, he illegally fled to Yugoslavia and came to Kranj. There he was employed in 1928 at the textile factory Jugočeška, then in Jugobrune and finally in the factory Sirc, where he worked until January 1932. From 1935 until the second half of 1937 he was unemployed.

In Kranj, in 1941 until January 1942 he worked as an activist of OF on the field of Stražišče-Kranj. From January 1942 until joining the partisans, he continued his work for OF in Hruševje near Postojna. Upon the capitulation of Italy in 1943, he joined the partisans. He was in the Gradnikovi brigade, in August 1944 he was sent as a corps officer and interpreter to the fourth battalion of Levstik's brigade "Roma", which was composed almost exclusively of fighters of Italian nationality.

He fell in battle with the Germans and homeguards on 17th October 1944 on Veliki Korinj. He was taken to Ambrus and buried in a common grave with other Garibaldini partisans who had fallen on Veliki Korinj and the Oolica.

The memorial plaque was erected by the Local Committee of ZB NOV Zagradec in 1955.
