Gedenkweg-Station: Gefängnis Bregenz Oberstadt

Between 1938 and 1945, approximately 6,000 people (among them roughly 1,500 Vorarlberg residents) were detained in the Bregenz-Oberstadt Prison. Since the main headquarters of the Gestapo was located in Bregenz, all Gestapo detainees, who were often destined for interrogations or for further transport to other prisons, camps, and police stations, were held in the Bregenz-Oberstadt Prison. A wave of arrests also occurred in Vorarlberg in March 1938, when numerous influential and well-known regime opponents were arrested. The memorial plaque was initially installed in the foyer of the Bundesdenkmalamt, which is currently located there, in 1985, and in 2010 was moved to the exterior façade due to lack of visibility. The site is part of a memorial trail that has been commemorating resistance and persecution in Bregenz since 2002 with several memorial plaques.
