Dolnji Suhor - Memorial Plaque, Dedicated to the Fallen Fighters and Fascist Victims in Dolnji Suhorj

Memorial plaque is dedicated to 78 fallen fighters and victims of fascist violence from 14 villages in the vicinity. It was unveiled on 25 November 1954.

Historical background

During the national liberation struggle, Dolnji Suhor was one of the most significant locations in the White region, even for the occupiers. On 17 November 1942, the Italians installed fortified military outposts in the school and parish house and with them intended to halt the national liberation movement in the area. Less than two weeks later, on 26 November, the outposts were destroyed by fighters from the 13th Proletarian and Cankarjev Brigades. Both the school and the parish house were burned down in this clash. After the Italian capitulation, Dolnji Suhor was almost entirely free territory, except during the German incursion at the end of October and beginning of November 1943. Between 1943 and 1945, the village also hosted a partisan telephone exchange, which established and maintained contact with Croatian partisan units and partisan hospitals in Žumberak, and for a short time from autumn 1942 until the Italian capitulation, also the partisan courier station TV-7, before it was moved to Metliko.
