Bukovica pri Novi Gorici

The memorial is made of a concrete pillar and two concrete walls, on which are two marble plates with a dedication. The author is Anton Gaspari; erected on 27th September 1959.

KS Bukovica-Volčja Draga chose 19th September as its anniversary to commemorate the September events of the Second World War in 1943. At that time, nine partisan battalions, in which were between four and five thousand fighters, encircled Gorica and on 11th September launched an attack. A 17 kilometre long mountain front was formed, but due to the strength of the German units, the partisan units had to retreat to Trnovski Forest on 25th September. Since the inhabitants of Bukovica and Volčja Draga were sympathetic to the partisans and many young men and girls from both villages decided to leave for the partisans, the Germans burned several houses in both villages on 19th September 1943 and shot six villagers, who had been found hidden in a bunker. They found seven of them, one, the oldest, had luckily escaped just before the shooting.
