GAČNIK PRI JARENINSKEM DOLU - Memorial Plaque at Šabedrova Home

The plaque is dedicated to the post station of Lackov's unit.

Šabedrova home was an important post station for couriers, informants and partisans during the NOB period. Couriers' routes, which led from Pohorje to the Slovenian High Plateaus, crossed precisely at the Šabedro family. The family's hospitality was also enjoyed by the fighters of Lackov's unit.

Partisans often rested at Šabedrova home, from there they sent news to the partisans, collected weapons, medical supplies and in 1944 even established a complete printing press, which supplied the Slovenian High Plateaus with propaganda material. Under the lope was a bunker, where activists of OF stayed and stored propaganda material. In spring 1944, the secretary of the SKOJ for Maribor district, Marjan Bantan-Stojan, was recovering at Šabedrova home, having suffered from typhus.

A group also hid in Gačnik for some time, which had escaped from forced labor in Kapfenberg, Austria, in late August 1944, and wished to join the Slovenian partisans. The group consisted of three Czechs, two Italians and a Triestine Slovene. They arrived by train via Gradca to Cirknice near Šentilj, where a partisan patrol was supposed to take them in the nearby forest. However, the patrol unexpectedly encountered Germans, and the connection was broken. The group, which had been accompanied by two Slovenes on the way, had to hide for some time in Gačnik and at St. Jacob, until a courier took them to the Javka, where Lackov's unit took them in.

Janko Horvat, who had escaped from Gradca, also waited in Gačnik for a patrol of Lackov's unit, which took him to Kozjak. The plaque was placed by the committee of Lackov's unit. A memorial plaque at Šabedrova home was installed in 1976.
