Gerasimos-Garnelis-Way

On April 12, 2015, the connecting path from the Steiner Landstraße to the Steiner Donaulände was named after the Greek resistance fighter Gerasimos Garnelis. Garnelis fought in the armed resistance against German troops in Greece. He participated in sabotage actions and the destruction of German bombers, was arrested, sentenced to death, and after internment was transferred to Stein via a prisoner island in the Aegean Sea. Garnelis survived the massacre carried out by the SS, Waffen-SS, Wehrmacht soldiers and Volkssturm on April 6, 1945, against the prisoners in the Stein detention facility.

After the liberation, Gerasimos Garnelis could not return to Greece due to the civil war that was raging there. He lived over 50 years in Krems, ran an electrical goods shop, and was president of the football club 1. FC Stein. He died in poverty in 1999. In April 1995, during the commemorative event "386" marking the 50th anniversary of the massacre, Garnelis first spoke publicly about his life.
