Franja Bojc, German Vas

In this house, Nemška vas 38, near Ribnica, on 26th November 1913, as the third child in a numerically large peasant family, Franja Bojc was born, later married to Bidovec. During her studies in medicine at the Ljubljana Medical Faculty, she became a member of the club Njiva and the Society of Peasant Boys and Girls. Her studies continued in Belgrade and she completed them in Zagreb in 1939. Her first service was in Bohinjska Bistrica. In the years 1941–1943, she was the general hospital in Ribnica and at that time illegally collaborated with the national liberation movement. In September 1943, she joined the partisans and became an assistant to Dr. Janez Oražman, the local fisherman doctor, who became the head of the newly established partisan divisional hospital in the Ribnica castle. Upon the withdrawal before the German offensive, which began in October 1943, she was among the prisoners, who were captured near Travnička Gora in November, and at that time, part of the personnel and wounded were killed. With Dr. Pavlina Jerin, she was taken to the Trboški prison camps and after release, both returned to the partisans, Pavla to Trnovski Forest, and Franja was sent to Cerkljan. She arrived in Cerkno and Pasico on 2nd January 1944. The position of the hospital administrator, which began to be built in November 1943 and which in December of the same year received its first wounded, was led by Dr. Viktor Volčjak, who also proposed naming the hospital after Dr. Franja, which she took over on 22nd January 1944, and under her leadership the hospital expanded and successfully fulfilled its role until liberation.

After liberation, she worked in military hospitals in Gorica, Trieste and Ljubljana until 1946, then on gynaecological and maternity clinics in Belgrade and Ljubljana, in 1953 she passed the specialist examination, in 1963 she completed a postgraduate study in genital tuberculosis in Ljubljana and Italy, in 1966 she became an assistant on the gynaecological clinic in Belgrade, and from 1967–1973 she was the head of the gynaecological outpatient department in the military hospital in Ljubljana. She published more than ten articles in Yugoslav and foreign professional journals. She was a member of the republic council and an honorary member of the Slovenian Medical Society. For her work, she received several military and civilian awards and distinctions. She wrote the book Ni neskončnih poti: pisma sinu.

She died in Ljubljana on 26th November 1985.
