Anschlag im Alauntal

In June 1933, Austria was shaken by a national socialist terror wave involving bomb attacks, arson and brawls. On June 19, 1933, two SA men in the Alauntal near Krems carried out an attack on auxiliary police officers. The establishment of an auxiliary police force was a measure of the Austrofascist dictatorship, which was set up in March 1933 through the suppression of parliament.

A unit consisting of 56 men of the Austrofascist auxiliary police was on the way back to Krems after a shooting exercise at Egelsee, when the two SA men Adolf Weichselbaum and Herbert Mösel hurled hand grenades into the formation. The auxiliary police officer Franz Blamoser died, 30 men were injured. Immediately after the attack, the NSDAP was banned throughout all of Austria.

A memorial stone was set up at the site of the attack in the Alauntal in 1933. After the "Anschluss" in 1938, it was removed by the National Socialists.
