Bezuljak - Memorial Sculpture Milke Popek

Milka Popek originates from a family from which brothers, national hero Alojz and pioneer Tone-Maks, both fell in 1943. Immediately after the capitulation of the old Yugoslavia, all three sought contact with the advanced youth and joined the Crimean battalion and operated in several units, which functioned within the framework of the Internal Security Directorate. They decided to resist the occupier until liberation, even at the cost of their lives. Her memorial sculpture, a work of the academic sculptor Stojan Batič, was placed on the green space in front of her birthplace, where she spent the last years alone. An agreement between the municipality of Cerknica, ZB NOB Cerknica and relatives contributed to the sculpture being relocated to a new location. This is a monument – a wall, which symbolizes the attack of the Crimean battalion's brothers on the Italian outpost and the destruction of the ammunition depot on 20 October 1941.

 The sculpture, 43 cm in height, stands on a marble pedestal 23 cm wide and 16 cm deep.
