Franc Štoka - Rado

Monument erected on the 10th anniversary of the death of F. Štoka (22.12. 1979). Bronze on a stone base.

Štoka Franc-Rado, revolutionary, fighter for NOV, born on 11 August 1901 in Kontovelu near Trst, died on 25 August 1969 in Ljubljana. He attended school at Prosek, became like a father to fishermen and participated in national demonstrations; in 1921 he became a member of KPJ, in 1928 he left for Argentina, where he worked in KP among Slovene emigrants; in 1930 the Argentine authorities expelled him for revolutionary activities and handed him over to Italian police. He was confined on the island of Ponzi, where he often crossed paths with authorities due to revolutionary conduct, was several times imprisoned and transferred to the island of Ventotene until July 1943. After his release from confinement, he participated in the national liberation movement in Trst and helped send Triestine and Triest workers to the partisans. He was political commissar of the Triestine battalion (area Repentabor-Nabrežina). When the battalion was decimated in the German offensive, Š. joined the Kosovel brigade on Kras with the unit. At the end of 1943 he was transferred to the district committee of KPS for Kras, in February 1944 he became secretary of the district committee of KPS in the newly established district of Tržič; in April 1944 the district was dissolved and Š. became secretary of the district committee for Trst, a member of the general committee of KPS and KPI in Trst, and in the summer of 1944 participated in talks between representatives of OF and Comit. di Liberazione nazionale di Alta Italia in Milan; he was also political commissar of the city's command and participated in the battles for the liberation of Trst on May days 1945; from 1945 he was a political worker in Trst, Kopru and Ljubljana. He wrote about fishing and tourism on the Primorska coast and published various articles on political activities. (Tone Ferenc)
