"
1941 were arrested by the Gestapo and sent to the transit camp Šmartno near Slovenj
Gradec. He later wrote that they were mistreated there only because they were
conscientious Slovenes, among them were (apart from him) Jakob Soklič and Karel
Destovnik – Kajuh. He survived more than two months in prison and the same year
(1941) the Nazis deported him to Croatia and then to Bosnia. In Palah in Bosnia and
Herzegovina he received a spiritual service, but at the end of 1941 he was captured
by the militia. In February 1942 he managed to cross Bosnia and Serbia into the
Ljubljana region and took refuge in the monastery in Stična, where he awaited the end
of the war. "
