MEMORIAL OF LOCAL SIGNIFICANCE

The cemetery lies in the karst landscape approximately 200 m from the track of the partisan railway, along which today runs a forest path, near the site of the former partisan hospital, which was located in the 20 m vicinity of the forest.

The partisan hospital Pugled was built in March 1943 in the forest near the former settlement Žaga Rog. The first wounded were admitted on March 18. The hospital consisted of wooden structures made of fir logs. They were covered with bark. It consisted of a large barrack for the wounded, a small barrack for the staff, a kitchen and a storehouse. The hospital also had an underground bunker for retreat in case of danger. It was led by dr. Božena Ravnikar – Nataša and dr. Andrej Zupančič – Mike.

The cemetery is enclosed by natural stone – rubble. It is arranged in a terraced layout. Three steps, made of stacked stones, lead to the terrace. In the middle of the cemetery is a stone slab with two stone benches made of natural rubble and a cylindrical 3 m high pillar with spiral carved grooves and an inscription.

During the German offensive after the Italian capitulation, the hospital was evacuated by the Germans on October 27, 1943. 27 wounded and the staff withdrew in time, but there was not enough time for the evacuation of 21 wounded. German soldiers killed them and burned them together with the barrack. One of the wounded, that is, Anica Mohar – Smiljka, survived the massacre, since the nurse took her out of the barrack in time and hid her among the rocks. The Germans found her anyway, used her as bait for the partisans, but the nurses managed to rescue her after five days.

The plan for the memorial and cemetery was designed by architect Miloš Lapajne. It was arranged by the Main Committee of the Union of Fighters and the Municipal Committee of the Union of Fighters of Novo Mesto in 1957. The unveiling took place in 1959. The cemetery is maintained by the Society for the Maintenance of Partisan Cemeteries in Rog.
